Hockey Goalies: An Ode

Since I’m waiting to comment on hockey until after the Pens/Flyers Game 4, I feel it is only appropriate to leave the blog-reading world with something to tide them over.

It’s no secret that my favorite players in hockey tend to be goalies. Perhaps it’s admiration or perhaps it’s because I’m attracted to their toughness, but goalies always draw my attention. Hands-down they play the toughest position on the ice. The pressure, the reflexes, the mindset—all have to be in check. I don’t envy them, especially having always been goalie in our pick-up, street hockey games. To show my love and appreciation for some of the NHL’s finest (much love for #33, Mr. Roy), I decided to put together a little something. I simply call it—An Ode to a Goalie.

Putting on his gear
Only minutes until the game
Securing his pads and mask
His precious face can’t be maimed

As soon as the puck drops
All hearts are racing
But nothing compares
To the shots he will be facing

The first period is slow
But he’s four-for-four
He refuses to complain
Hey, nobody scored

His team finds the net minutes into the second
When someone flies into him out of the right
Interference gets called, gloves are off
He’s throwing down for a fight

At the end of the period
When a shorthander bounces in off his knee
He isn’t bothered and quips
“We’re still up by three”

But the other team ties it up
Towards the end of the third
Uncontrollably sweating, he mutters
“Man, this is obsurd”

It’s now in over time
Backhanders and slap shots he’s stopping
“Son, I am awesome”
His head he is bopping

His defense is a lost cause
As a shoot out is looming
He’s saved 38 shots now
His glove’s constantly zooming

Into the shoot out
He’s definitely feeling burnt
Could they score a goal
Not against him they shornt

The game comes down to a shot
The final shooter being Datsyuk
After stopping the puck, he yells
“Sucker, you got WORKED”

He hates doing interviews
But it’s all part of winning the game
Then, he plans to tell everyone he’s awesome
Maybe even bang out some dame

I applaud you Mr. Goalie
At defending your net
You’re the most skilled hockey player
Plus, you just won me a bet

I enjoyed the poem. I agree that goalies are the best players. They have the hardest job in the world.

How would you like a job where, every time you make a mistake, a big red light goes on and 18,000 people boo?
